Bolsa Família is effective in promoting social mobility
In a recent study, researchers from the Institute for Mobility and Social Development, Oppen Social, the Ministry of Health, the Getulio Vargas Foundation, PUC-Rio and Bacconi University, in Italy, concluded that such programs promote social mobility. The researchers identified children between the ages of 7 and 16 who were part of Bolsa Familia in December 2005, the first generation of the program. More than ten years later, as adults, 64% were not listed as beneficiaries of federal government social programs, and 45% had found a job with a formal contract between 2015 and 2019. Half of these remained in the formal market for three or more years. Although they occupied low-paid positions, they were better off than their parents.
