IMDS presents panel of state indicators to assist the election debate
Institute seeks to support the political debate based on data, around themes essential to social development
The Institute for Mobility and Social Development (IMDS) makes available on its website the presentation "IMDS - Elections 2022: State Indicators". The material offers an overview of state indicators with the objective of assisting the electoral debate around economic and social development. The content will be public: both candidates and citizens in general and voters will be able to have this information to enrich the level of public debate around key data-based topics.
The panel gathers information on 11 themes: business environment, social assistance, economic activity, income distribution, education, tax, housing, labor market, social mobility, health, and security. For all of them, the comparison tool between the Units of the Federation (UFs) throughout the country will be available.
"The themes listed were selected because they are related to factors that can offer a person the opportunity to progress in life and be able to live in better conditions than those that their parents lived and live in – that is, that can promote social mobility," says Paulo Tafner, CEO of IMDS.
The content developed by the institute shows that the concept of social mobility is related in different ways to the central themes mentioned. Education and health, for example, represent the accumulation of human capital, a fundamental element in understanding economic growth. The themes of social assistance, income distribution and housing bring analyses on the most vulnerable population, elucidating aspects such as the incidence of poverty and extreme poverty, in addition to housing conditions and access to basic resources. On the other hand, the theme of security engages with the state's ability to guarantee the right to life in safe conditions, which makes it possible to realize full human, social, and economic development.
It is also worth mentioning the labor market indicators, which seek to show productive insertion and economic dynamism, portraying aspects such as the representativeness of informal work in Brazilian states. And finally, the themes business environment, economic activity and tax reveal the ease of conducting business in each Unit of the Federation and highlight possible obstacles to a more robust growth of the economy. With this group of indicators, it is also possible to analyze the macroeconomic context of Brazilian states.
The panel also includes different sections, which enrich the reader's research. The user has the option to select a UF to see in which position it is in accordance with the result of the indicators in the last year of available information. It can also analyze the comparison of the temporal evolution of indicators between different social groups - sex, skin color or race, income, and schooling of the head of household - in addition to other available tools.
