Digital exclusion grows in pandemic and should curb social mobility
The pandemic has deepened the inequality rift for those unable to access the Internet and education, which will hinder the economic rise of a portion of Amazonian children and young people. The risk that children will be unable to earn more than adult parents increases. The alert was put out by the Institute for Mobility and Social Development (IMDS).
According to the survey, in Brazil only 29.6% of the children of parents without any socio-educational instruction have access to broadband. In households where parents have higher education, this share increases to 89.4%. According to the same survey, 55% of the children of uneducated parents do not have access to the Internet. The number drops to 4.9% when parents complete university.
