Atlas of Social Mobility shows low chance of ascension to the richest 10% in Brazil; Bahia has a municipal average of 1.37%
On Saturday (05/23/2026), the analysis of the municipal indicators of the Atlas of Social Mobility Brazil, based on data from the Institute for Mobility and Social Development (IMDS), shows that the chance of a child born in families located in the lower half of the income distribution reaching, as an adult, the group of the richest 10% remains low in the country. The analysis gathers data from 5,570 Brazilian municipalities, of which 5,451 have valid information, and points to strong territorial inequality in intergenerational income mobility. In Bahia, the 417 municipalities appear with a simple average of 1.37%, below the national simple average calculated from municipalities with valid data, of 2.16%.
