In 2021, we launched the material ‘Children and adolescents: magnitude of poverty and extreme poverty in Brazil,’ in which we present a deep dive in the numbers of poverty and extreme poverty, based on data from the Continuous PNAD from 2012 to 2019, among children and adolescents from 0 to 17 years of age in Brazil.
The study inaugurated a collection of three publications that sought to understand the extent of the problem and the factors behind this condition, which is acute in this age group, which is so crucial for the development of abilities of the individual.
Based on the new data released from the 2020 Continuous PNAD, we revisited those indicators. On the one hand, this is part of IMDS’ effort to keep available content up to date for those interested in the topic. On the other hand, it gives a close look at a period of great concern for society and for public policy managers – the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The presentation ‘Monetary poverty of children and adolescents in Brazil: 2019-2020’ brings important data – first, it shows that, fortunately, despite the challenges presented in the period, there was a reduction in the poverty of children and young people; secondly, it highlights the imperative role of public policy in times of crisis. That is, in the publication, it is possible to see how the transfer of disposable income through Emergency Aid represented a kind of buffer for the problem of poverty in the country.
We hope that the material will be one more input to equip interested scholars and managers with content that helps in the construction of public policies and social programs capable of reducing inequalities and increasing social mobility.
