To climb the social ladder through self-effort, people need equal opportunities to access quality education. However, Brazil has a serious problem of educational inequality, which affects the possibilities of social mobility of its citizens. To assess this issue, IMDS developed the Educational Opportunities Index (EOI).
The EOI was based on a World Bank indicator and takes into account individual characteristics that can influence people’s educational trajectory, such as sex, skin color, income, and location, and uses opportunity indicators that represent the main stages of education. The Index is a useful tool for developing public policies that reduce educational inequality and promote social mobility in Brazil, identifying the factors that most need attention.
The presentation “Educational Opportunities and Social Mobility in Brazil” shows how the index was calculated and what the main findings were on educational inequalities in the country. The presentation details each indicator, with historical data since 2012, and comparisons between regions of Brazil.
