Evolution and intensity of school abandonment and dropout: An analysis based on School Census data
Fourth of the series Abandonment and Dropout, this panel presents the evolution of school abandonment and dropout rates between 2008 and 2020, to all years and stages of education, based on data from the School Census, made available by the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira – Inep.
The objective is to identify the problem from a recent historical perspective, as well as to understand at which stages of school life it manifests most acutely. It is possible to compare the indicators between regions, Units of the Federation, municipalities, the area of location of the school and its administrative dependence, in addition to analyzing the indicators of abandonment with clippings of sex, skin color or race and years of lag of students, or the socioeconomic level of the school.

School dropout: recent scenario in Brazil
IMDS inaugurates one more thematic axis of studies that seek to understand the development of human capital of the country’s children, adolescents and young people, as well as understand how the context in which they live influences this construction. This is another effort to build diagnoses that guide ways to reduce inequality of opportunities and promote social mobility.
Based on data from the National Continuous Household Sample Survey (Continuous PNAD), we have built educational indicators for young people from 15 to 21 years of age that map out whether they are studying or are out of school, whether they have completed basic education, the reasons for their leaving school for those who do not attend and have not completed, the highest educational level achieved and the position in the occupation of those who have dropped out. These indicators can also be compared between groups, based on socioeconomic, demographic and area of residence clippings.

Territory and intensity of school abandonment and dropout
This panel comprises the series of indicators of the thematic axis of dropout and school abandonment, which seeks to understand the construction of human capital of the country’s children, adolescents and young people.
Based on data from the School Census, provided by the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira – INEP -, the panel presents indicators of dropout and abandonment per year and stage/grades of education, in a territorialized manner, explaining the intensity of the problem by Unit of the Federation and municipality. It is possible to visualize the results over the years, from 2008 to 2020, and make comparisons by rural or urban area, sex and skin color or race of students, as well as based on the division between those with or without age-grade distortion.

Territory and inequality of abandonment among schools
One more panel of the series of indicators of the thematic axis of school dropout and abandonment, “Territory and inequality of abandonment among schools” seeks to analyze the problem of abandonment based on the inequality between public schools in each territory – be it the Unit of the Federation, mesoregion or microregion.
Constructed from information on the Final Situation of the Student, an INEP database, the panel presents the dispersion of abandonment rates per stage/grade of education each year, between 2008 and 2020, for the territorial clippings under analysis. Again, it is possible to compare the results by rural or urban area, sex and skin color or race of students, as well as from the division between those with or without age-grade distortion.
