Study measures low social mobility in Brazil
In a Brazil marked by income inequality, the social mobility of children from poor families is also limited. Children born in the poorest 25% of the population are only 8.3% likely to be in the richest 25% in adulthood and 1.3% manage to reach the richest 10%. At the same time, they have a 48% chance of remaining in the same 25% group.
On the other hand, children of families in the group with the highest 25% of income are 54.5% likely to remain at the top of income and 30.9% of rising to the most select group of the richest 10%.
The accounts are part of the new version of the Atlas of Social Mobility, a data platform developed by the Institute for Mobility and Social Development (IMDS), in partnership with Prospera Lab.
