Salvador registers low social mobility and reveals difficulty for poor children to reach the richest 10%
On Saturday (May 23, 2026), the analysis of the municipal indicators of the Atlas of Social Mobility Brazil, based on data from the Institute for Mobility and Social Development (IMDS), shows that Salvador, the capital of Bahia and the largest city in the state, registers a probability of 1.54% of a child born in a family located in the lower half of the income distribution reaching, as an adult, the group of the richest 10%. The index places the capital above the simple average of Bahia, of 1.37%, but below the simple national average of the valid municipalities analyzed, of 2.16%, showing that the economic, population and political weight of the capital does not eliminate the historical obstacles to social mobility.
