CIEE RIO REGISTERS 25% GROWTH IN THE FIRST QUARTER IN INTERNSHIP AND APPRENTICESHIP
In a recent study published by the Institute for Mobility and Social Development (IMDS), “the law had marked effects on the country’s formal economy: from 2001 to 2005, the number of employed apprentices grew more than 10 times. (…) In practice, the new regulatory framework resulted in a significant expansion of the program, increasing the number of apprentices from less than 10,000 between 1998 and 2000 to almost 150,000 between 2001 and 2005. This expansion, however, occurred heterogeneously in the different Brazilian micro-regions: while some local labor markets replaced a large portion of their formal temporary contracts with apprentices, others remained very close to the pre-reform situation.
