Children condemned to stagnation
The probability of a Brazilian being born poor and dying poor is high. Less than 2% of children whose parents are among the poorest 50% of the country will reach the income of the richest 10%. And the most likely to happen is that 66% of them will still be in the same range as their ancestors when they reach adulthood.
These projections are from the recently released Atlas of Social Mobility in Brazil, by the Institute for Mobility and Social Development (IMDS), founded by economists Arminio Fraga and Paulo Tafner. The study on intergenerational mobility outlines a very bleak scenario, given that it is social immobility in the country that seems to be the rule.
