Children and adolescents: characterization of per capita household income of children and adolescents in Brazil

Closing the series of studies on poverty in childhood and adolescence with data from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Continuous PNAD), we present the “Characterization of per capita household income of children and adolescents in Brazil”.

In the first study of the series, we speak about the evolution of the incidence, distribution, and poverty gap. In the second, we present the discussion about the conditions for the development of skills and possible barriers to mobility. In this third, we address the composition of household income and what is behind the per capita income of households with children and adolescents.

In the presentation, based on the Continuous PNAD of 2019 comparisons between the households of poor children and adolescents (identified from the regionalized poverty line) and those residing in households with the 20% highest per capita income are made. The indicators investigated touch upon themes such as the ratio of financial dependency, occupation, and composition of household income, among others.

We have arrived at the end of this series seeking to understand the configuration of households of poor children and adolescents and what differentiates them from those with higher income. Thus, we hope to offer input for the debate and suggest paths to take to improve the socioeconomic conditions of the poor and to diminish the differences in opportunities, in search of a society where children and adolescents can aspire to greater social mobility.
