Sergipe is the fifth Brazilian state with the highest number of poor people. The Map of the New Poverty line, released by the Getúlio Vargas Foundation, reveals that 48.17% of the Sergipe population, therefore almost half, have a per capita household income of up to R$497.00 per month. In this sad championship of the empty plate, Sergipe only loses to Maranhão (57.90%), Amazonas (51.42%), Alagoas (50.36%) and Pernambuco (50.32%). Moreover, according to a study made by the Institute for Mobility and Social Development, Sergipe was the state with the highest increase in the number of poor families. Poverty advanced 12.5% among Sergipanos, almost three times the national average, which was 5%.
