Extreme Poverty Increases 23% in Bahia
In the last ten years, the number of Bahianos in extreme poverty increased from 2.2 million in 2012 to 2.7 million last year, which represented a growth of almost 23%, according to data from the Institute for Mobility and Social Development (IMDS), based on data from Continuous PNAD. There was an increase even in comparison with the period before the pandemic, in a smaller proportion of 5%. The number of people in Bahia classified as poor also grew from 5.5 million to 5.8 million between 2012 and 2021.
