Long-Term Effects of Childhood Neighborhoods
The research “Long-Term Effects of Childhood Neighborhoods” investigates how childhood neighborhoods influence social mobility. Given the scope of the theme, the study is divided into two stages: (1) build a neighborhood quality metric over time; and (2) estimate the extent to which infrastructure coverage in childhood neighborhoods is associated with social mobility developments.
For the first stage, we mapped the spatial coverage of different infrastructure equipment between 2008 and 2022 and access to jobs between 2012 and 2019. In the second stage, we identify via CadÚnico, the place of residence of young people born between 1997 and 2001 and compare their social mobility according to whether they grew up in areas with high versus low infrastructure coverage.
