Social Mobility
The Social Mobility Panel presents estimates on the economic trajectories of children from low-income families in Brazil, based on the comparison between their fathers’ income — observed during their children’s childhood and adolescence — and their children’s own income in adult life. The estimates derive from large administrative bases linked between generations, which allows for an accurate portrayal of the dynamics of intergenerational mobility in the country.
The tool makes it possible to explore how the chances of social ascension or permanence in the lower levels of income distribution vary according to the profile of individuals — such as sex, skin color or race, and fathers’ education — and the territory of origin. The results can also be viewed at different territorial scales, with the possibility of comparing indicators both between states and between municipalities.
The panel expands the possibilities of analysis offered by the Atlas of Mobility, working as a complementary resource for studies, diagnoses and formulation of evidence-based public policies.
