Black people lose six years of life to poverty and violence, IBGE points out
The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) does not produce this type of data, but unpublished work by the Institute for Mobility and Social Development (IMDS) and the Center for Development and Regional Planning at UFMG used information from the Census and death records from the Ministry of Health to calculate the difference in life expectancy.
In the research, blacks and browns were grouped into “blacks”, which, according to the 2022 Census, make up 55.5% of Brazilians. Expectations at birth in two decades were considered: 2000-2009 and 2010-2019. The poor quality of data on deaths prior to 2000 made estimates for the 1990s impossible.
