Children and adolescents: monetary poverty and conditions for skills development in Brazil

Following studies on poverty in childhood and adolescence with data from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Continuous PNAD) 2012 to 2019, we present the theme monetary poverty and conditions for the development of child and adolescent skills in Brazil. In the first study of the series which can be accessed here , we talk about the evolution of the incidence, the distribution, and the poverty gap. Now, we address the possible barriers to social mobility.

Throughout the presentation, comparisons are made of the characteristics of households and their residents, among which poor children and adolescents (identified from the regionalized poverty line) are compared to those who live in households with the country’s 20% highest per capita income. The topics addressed are household composition, housing conditions, access to durable goods, and information technology and communication, education of household inhabitants and partial education results for 0-to-17-year-old Brazilians.

We seek with this publication to shed light on the realities of children and young people from different socioeconomic backgrounds and foster the debate on how to build a country with greater ascending social mobility, thus offering better possibilities to all to develop and break out of the existing poverty cycles.
