Children and adolescents: monetary poverty and conditions for skills development in Brazil

Following the studies on poverty in childhood and adolescence with data from the National Continuous Household Sample Survey (Continuous PNAD) 2012 to 2021, we present the theme monetary poverty and conditions for the development of skills of children and adolescents in Brazil. In the first study of the series, we talked about the evolution of the incidence, distribution, and poverty gap. In this one, we address the possible barriers to social mobility.

In the panel, we make comparisons of the characteristics of households and their residents among poor children and adolescents (identified from the regionalized poverty line) and among those who live in households with the 20% highest per capita income in the country. The topics addressed are household composition, housing conditions, access to durable goods and information and communication technology (ICT), education of cohabitants and partial education results of Brazilians between 0 and 17 years of age.

We seek with these indicators to shed light on the realities of children and young people from different socioeconomic contexts and foster the debate on how to build a country with greater upward social mobility, thus offering better possibilities for all to develop and break the cycles of poverty that exist today.
