"IMDS Elections", the panel of state indicators to assist the electoral debate

Content aims to support the data-based political debate, around themes essential to social development

Hello, *|NOME|*

In this IMDS Letter - Special Edition we would like to present the "IMDS - Elections 2022: State Indicators", with contents that offer an overview of indicators of all Brazilian states. The aim is to assist the electoral debate around economic and social development. The material is public in nature: both candidates and citizens in general and voters will be able to have this information to enrich the level of public debate around key data-based topics.

Readers and users will see that the presentations gather information on 11 themes: business environment, social assistance, economic activity, income distribution, education, tax, housing, labor market, social mobility, health, and safety. For all these subjects it is possible to use a comparison tool between federative units (UFs) throughout the country.

"The themes listed were selected because they are related to factors that can offer a person the opportunity to progress in life and be able to live in better conditions than those that their parents lived and live in – that is, that can promote social mobility," says Paulo Tafner, CEO of IMDS.

The content developed by IMDS shows that the concept of social mobility is related in different ways to the thematic axes mentioned. Education and health, for example, represent the accumulation of human capital, a fundamental element in understanding economic growth. The themes of social assistance, income distribution and housing bring analyses on the most vulnerable population, elucidating aspects such as the incidence of poverty and extreme poverty, in addition to housing conditions and access to basic resources. On the other hand, the theme of security dialogues with the state's ability to guarantee the right to life in safe conditions, which makes it possible to effect full human, social and economic development.

It is also worth mentioning the labor market indicators, which seek to show productive insertion and economic dynamism, portraying aspects such as the representativeness of informal work in Brazilian states. And finally, the themes business environment and economic and fiscal activity reveal the ease of conducting business in each Federative Unit and highlight possible obstacles in the more robust growth of the economy. With this group of indicators, it is also possible to analyze the macroeconomic context of Brazilian states.

The indicator panel includes different sections, which enrich the reader's research. The user has the option to select a UF to see in which position it stands in accordance with the result of the indicators in the last year of available information. One can also analyze the comparison of the temporal evolution of indicators among different social groups --gender, skin color or race, income, and schooling of the guardian--, among other available tools.

The presentation IMDS – Elections 2022 - Social mobility: state indicators and public policies is a guided navigation through the indicators, explaining factors that influence social mobility in stages of a life cycle - childhood, adolescence, and youth - and regarding the family and the territory in which individuals live. Finally, it also brings examples of public policies that seek to solve challenges that present themselves in these spheres.

We hope that "IMDS Elections 2022" will be useful for those who accompany us through indicators that help in diagnosing the main challenges to be faced by states and their representatives in the coming years.
