Brazil has presented low rates of social mobility, despite the advances and improvements made in recent decades. Poorly designed and poorly focused policies have wasted a significant number of budgetary resources and produced low social mobility among those at the base of the social pyramid. Given this scenario, an opportunity arises for the discussion of evidence-based public policies and, consequently, for the contribution of the qualified choice of candidates presented to the election.
IMDS will launch in the 2nd half of this year the panel "IMDS Elections 2026: State Indicators". It is an update, expansion and improvement of the panel launched in August 2022. Content will be made available that offers an overview of indicators from all Units of the Federation. The objective is to assist the electoral debate around economic and social development. The material is public: both candidates and citizens in general will be able to have this information to enrich the level of public debate around fundamental issues, based on data.
Users will find information on more than a dozen topics, such as social assistance, economic activity, income distribution, education, fiscal performance, housing, labor market, social mobility, health, and safety. For all these subjects, it will be possible to use a tool to compare the Units of the Federation (UFs) throughout the country, as well as to check the evolution over time.
The topics listed were selected because they are related to factors that affect the probability of social mobility, which can directly impact the trajectory of millions of individuals. The content developed by IMDS shows that the concept of social mobility is related in diverse ways to the thematic axes mentioned.

Education and health, for example, express the accumulation of human capital, a fundamental element for the individual trajectory and impact productivity and economic growth. The themes of social assistance, income distribution and housing bring analyses of the most vulnerable demographic groups, highlighting aspects such as the incidence of poverty and extreme poverty, as well as housing conditions and access to basic resources. The issue of security, on the other hand, dialogues with the State's ability to guarantee the right to life in safe conditions and the right to come and go of each individual.

It is also worth mentioning the labor market indicators, which seek to show productive insertion and economic dynamism, portraying aspects such as the representativeness of informal work in Brazilian states. The themes of business environment, economic activity and fiscal sustainability reveal the degree of ease of doing business in each Unit of the Federation and highlight possible obstacles to the more robust growth of the regional economy. With this group of indicators, it will also be possible to analyze the macroeconomic context of the Brazilian states and the capacity of each state to respond to social demands.
The panel of indicators will include different sections, which will enrich the reader's research. The user will have the option of selecting a state to see in which position it is in relation to the others and will be able to compare the temporal evolution of the indicators between different social groups – sex, skin color or race, income, and education of the person in charge – and will be able to download the data series.
The launch of "IMDS Elections 2026" aims to continue the institute's initiative to promote transparency and access to information, fundamental for a conscious and more accessible electoral debate. In addition to this objective, the tool will also provide solid support for public management, with data that can enhance the preparation of government plans and public policies.
As soon as the "IMDS Elections 2026" is available on our website, all information and details will be disclosed here in the "IMDS Letter".
