IMDS updates and modernizes Impact Platform

The new tool facilitates the search for users and offers a more complete overview of public policies throughout the life cycle

Hello, *|NOME|*

One of the greatest advances in empirical social sciences in recent decades has been the accumulation of a solid body of evidence regarding the impact of public policies and social programs. The maturity achieved by this body of research is impressive: we have many estimates on the causal effects of maternity leave, the availability of primary care services, public nurseries and daycare centers for children from low- and high-income families, the pedagogy of literacy, initiatives aimed at supporting socio-emotional development and mental health in school, microcredit, income transfers, with and without conditionalities, professional training policies, initiatives to support rapid reintegration into the labor market.

This information is now scattered in approximately 50 international journals and research reports from agencies that have been working for years with the empirical economics of human development documentation. Obviously, the multiplicity of channels, the technical language and the use of English as the standard language do not contribute to the information being passed on to those who need it most in our country: public managers and people involved in the decision-making process regarding goods and services of public interest.

To support the use of evidence by public management and the construction of initiatives with potential impact, IMDS has built a collection of learnings from concrete experiences in the implementation of public policies and programs of social interest around the world. The project, called Impact Platform, launched in September 2022, is dedicated to building bridges between (i) scientific knowledge about public policies and third sector programs with the potential to affect human development and social mobility; (ii) the actions of public management when they think about the design of their policies.

Today, the database includes information on 512 social programs implemented around the world. One year ago, it had only 152. Now, in a new version, we explore the possibilities of representing this set of information according to structures that we consider intuitive: the stages of life and the countries around the globe. This system allows you to narrow down and facilitate the search experience.

The first of these new search systems allows the user to search for information on specific causal links that are relevant to him in decision making. For example, the system allows the construction, by selection of tags, of the question: "What is the effect of literacy pedagogy on schooling indicators?". The second allows you to quickly locate the search to specific regions and countries in the world.

The launch of the new version of the Impact Platform crystallizes a fundamental purpose of IMDS’s: to monitor, evaluate and propose the execution of public policies with an impact on human development and social mobility. We invite users to browse our system when they want simplified information on the impacts of public policies and third sector programs, whether for program design, government evaluation, or for political projects of concrete implementation by the government.

IMDS's commitment to improve and modernize electronic search and search tools by our users is perennial and we envision possibilities for the future incorporation of new technological forms – such as artificial intelligence – that speed up and facilitate even more the search and researching of our users.

          Until the next "IMDS letter"!
