| Hello, *|NOME|* For all those who study the issue of social mobility in a country, there is a challenge associated with the availability of databases that allow the precise identification of all the necessary information about each individual, his family, his neighborhood, etc. The education of each individual and that of his parents, his income and that of his parents, the organizational form of the family and a plethora of other information limit and even prevent identifying more accurately the social mobility and intergenerational mobility potential of younger people. The IBGE surveys do not compose a panel that allows monitoring the evolution of a representative group of individuals. In addition, such studies do not collect information about the parents of these individuals, such as previous education, occupation, and income, except on two occasions – the 1996 and 2014 Supplements. In order to expand the capacity for analysis and development of new research focused on social mobility, IMDS entered into a partnership with a group of researchers from GAPPE/UFPE - Group for the Evaluation of Public and Economic Policies of the Federal University of Pernambuco –, led by Breno Sampaio, from UFPE, and Diogo Britto, from the University of Milan-Bicocca. for the construction of a social mobility data platform in Brazil and the preparation of academic studies and policy papers on topics of interest to the institute. The platform will be a tool for the analysis of social mobility in Brazil. It will present, in a simple and interactive way, data from the most recent research on social mobility at the local level and with information on gender and race, among others. The simple and accessible interface will allow it to be used not only by policymakers and academics, but also by society at large. The solution will make it possible to verify that, even within areas of few opportunities, there are islands of prosperity, which can point to solutions for Brazil and deserve to be studied, explain the coordinators, Breno Sampaio and Diogo e Britto, who will develop the project with researchers from IMDS together with researchers Alexandre Fonseca, from RFB (Federal Revenue Service of Brazil), and Lucas Warwar of Stanford University. The project was born from an article on intergenerational mobility in Brazil, and will also have the support of Paolo Pinotti, from Bocconi University. The partnership also aims to produce academic research and technical reports on policies and programs, with IMDS researchers, from the extensive GAPPE/UFPE database. These actions will generate a continuous creational flow of knowledge that will progressively be made available to the public. The vocation of IMDS to establish partnerships for the development of research projects and the availability of statistical data to the general public is once again made explicit with this new partnership. It will be a continuous line of research that will allow us to expand the knowledge of the issue of social mobility in Brazil, with territorial details never before seen in Brazilian studies. Soon new information about the initial project – the "Atlas of Social Mobility in Brazil" – will be brought to all our readers. See you at the next “Letter from IMDS”! Paulo Tafner CEO |
